From One Auger to a Foundation Drilling Leader
Our story
1974 – 1989: The First Auger and the Birth of D&B
Our journey began in 1974 when Ralph Henry saw a truck-mounted auger and purchased it with his 16-year-old son, Barry, in mind. By 1979, Barry was putting the truck to frequent use, building pole barns and augering holes for construction companies under the name D&B Auger Services Inc.
Throughout the 1980s, Barry and his wife and business partner, Bonnie, expanded the business into utility pole sales, delivery, and installation. They achieved this while raising three young children and being only in their early 20s—establishing the work ethic and dedication that still defines our company today.
1990 – 2005: Strategic Evolution
In the early 1990s, Barry and Bonnie ventured deeper into the drilling market, purchasing the third-largest truck-mounted drilling machine in Canada. In 1998, Don Henry joined his father, and together with Bonnie, they aggressively expanded the business.
Recognizing a void in the marketplace for specialized drilling, they purchased a 1988 track-mounted Spiradrill rig and put it to work immediately on a project in Burnaby that required pre-drilling for a 2,000-pile job. Just as his father had done 20 years earlier, Don learned how to use this new equipment, manage the project, and repair the drill personally. These long hours and difficult work led to the creation of Henry Foundation Drilling Inc.
2006 – Present: Industry Leadership & Expansion
In 2006, Don’s brother Ken joined the fold. This allowed Don to focus entirely on Henry Drilling—spreading word to prospective clients, purchasing more drills, and bidding projects throughout Western Canada. Ken focused his attention on running and operating D&B Auger Services Inc., while also managing the bookwork for both companies.
Since purchasing our first Soilmec track-mounted rig in 2008, Henry Foundation Drilling Inc. has grown to operate the largest fleet of drill rigs in British Columbia. Simultaneously, D&B Auger Services has expanded to dominate the market in the Lower Mainland for pole sales and installation and has opened a dedicated pole transport division in Alberta.
Today, all four Henrys—Barry, Bonnie, Don, and Ken—remain actively involved. As for the original 1974 truck-mounted auger? It is still part of our fleet today, working hard more than 40 years later.
